چکیده

The taxonomyof thegenusColoburaBillberg, 1820, oneof themost commonmembers of the Neotropical lowland forest butterßy fauna, is critically reviewed in light of available information on the morphology of both the immature stages and adults. Although regarded by almost all authors to date as monotypic, Colobura contains two species, one of which is described here as Colobura annulata sp. n. The immature stages of both the new species and Colobura dirce (Linnaeus, 1758) are described, compared, andÞgured. Both larval and adult phenotypes of the two speciesmay be readily separated, and a key to identiÞcation is provided. A review of published and unpublished information on the immature stages, hostplants, and adult behavior of both species reveals a possible case of ecological niche partitioning; larvae of C. dirce are solitary or occur in small groups on predominantly young trees or saplings, whereas those of C. annulata are highly gregarious on mature canopy trees. There is some evidence to suggest that adult ßight height may, in part, be correlated with the height of preferred hostplants.

Effects of Larval Food-limitation on Vanessa cardui Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

—Larval food-limitation may be an important factor influencing growth of lepidopteran populations. We tested effects of food-limitation on larval growth of Vanessa cardui Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), the painted lady butterfly. Vanessa cardui is a major pest of corn and soybeans in Iowa, making it a species of special interest. Larvae of V. cardui were reared on a commercial diet apport...

The Immature Stages and Natural History of Veladyris pardalis (Salvin, 1869) in Eastern Ecuador (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Lthomiinae)

Abstract We describe the immature stages and oviposition behavior of Veladyris pardalis (Salvin, 1869) from northeastern Ecuador. An unidentified species of Solanum (Solanaceae) is the larval food plant. Eggs are laid singly on leaves, stems or epiphytes growing on the host. Veladyris pardalis has four larval stadia, and takes 64-70 days to mature from oviposition to adult.

The endangered quino checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas editha quino (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

With the listing of the quino checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas editha quino, as a federally endangered species, research into its ecology and conservation is necessary to allow for recovery planning and management. We review systematics, distribution, natural history, and conservation prospects, with reference to pertinent literature about other E. editha subspecies. Additional information is ...

The Early Stages and Natural History of Antirrhea Adoptive Porphyrosticta (Watkins, 1928) in Eastern Ecuador (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Morphinae)

Here we describe the immature stages and ecological associations of Antirrhea adoptiva porphyrosticta Watkins, 1928 (Lepidoptera:Nymphalidae:Morphinae). The cloud forest bamboo, Chusquea scandens Kunth (Bambusoidea: Poaceae), serves as the larval food plant for this butterfly in eastern Ecuador, the first hostplant record for Antirrhea outside the family Arecaceae. The larvae of A. adoptiva por...
